Heritage of Southport - Fred and Joan Muirhead

Fred and Joan Muirhead were notable community figures in Southport, Queensland, recognized primarily for their significant contributions to preserving local history and heritage.

Historical Contributions
  • The Heritage of Southport: The Muirheads are best known for their extensive historical research, which culminated in the publication of the book The Heritage of Southport (first published in 1988). This work is considered a definitive record of the suburb's early development, colonial architecture, and social history.
  • Heritage Preservation: Beyond their writing, they were active advocates for the protection of Southport's historical landmarks during periods of rapid modern development on the Gold Coast.
  • Educational Legacy: Their research is frequently cited by local historians and used in cultural programs, such as self-guided walking tours and museum exhibits that explore the area's transition from "Nerang Creek Heads" to a major business district.

Local Legacy
  • Joan Muirhead Nature Reserve: In recognition of Joan's environmental and community work, the Joan Muirhead Nature Reserve was established in her honor. It is located in the nearby suburb of Paradise Point (North Gold Coast) and serves as a protected coastal area.
  • Gold Coast History: Their collective work remains a primary source for understanding the evolution of the "South Coast" before it was officially renamed the Gold Coast in 1958.

Specific verifiable details regarding Fred and Joan Muirhead include:

  • Primary Publication: Their central work, The Heritage of Southport, was published in 1988 by the Gold Coast City Council to commemorate the Australian Bicentenary. It remains a key reference for the region's history.

  • Geographic Commemoration: The Joan Muirhead Nature Reserve is a real 10-hectare coastal reserve located at Paradise Point. It was named to honor Joan Muirhead's advocacy for local flora and fauna.

  • Archival Access: Much of their original research and photography is held in the Local Studies Collection at the Southport Library, which serves as a repository for historical documents concerning the Gold Coast's evolution.

Unity in the Community = Opportunity.

The Gold Coast Youth Expo was born from a simple but urgent realization: our city’s future depends on the strength of the pathways we build today. Founded by Megan Speight, Director of Divergent Solutions Pty Ltd, this initiative is a professional and personal mission to restore the "heartbeat" of Southport and create a self-sustaining ecosystem for our youth.

Built on Heritage, Driven by Vision

This mission isn't new to our soil. Megan carries the legacy of her grandparents, Fred and Joan Muirhead, whose lifelong dedication to the Southport community set the standard for local service. Today, that heritage evolves. By combining professional qualifications in counselling and mental health advocacy with a "lived experience" accreditation, Megan has designed an event that understands the real struggles—and the real potential—of our young people.

Facing the Reality

We aren't naïve to the challenges. We know there is a current of anger, distrust, and "bad behaviour" that can cloud our city’s reputation. But we believe that behaviour is often a symptom of a lack of connection.

The Gold Coast Youth Expo exists to flip the script. We believe that if we want to see change, we must be the change. We are moving away from top-down lectures and moving toward:

  • Youth Voice, Youth Choice: Empowering young people to lead the conversation.

  • Mentorship Over Management: Connecting small business owners directly with youth to spark micro-internships and career pathways.

  • Resilient Safety: Building a community where we look out for our own, making us self-sufficient and secure.

Our Collective Pulse

We are incredibly lucky to have connected with a network of stallholders, mentors, and advocates who want to see Southport thrive again. By removing financial barriers and focusing on "Unity in the Community," we are proving that when we pool our resources, morale increases, turnover grows, and our city wins.

This is a rough start for a strong finish. We are here to prove that Southport doesn't just have a history—it has a future.

Join us. Let’s party with the people and build the Gold Coast we know is possible.
